For one thing, it eliminated the problem that all my players had memorized the monster manual and knew every weakness and statistic about the existing D&D creatures. Back in 1981 my family was living in Spain, and my only contact with D&D was a book called 'What is Dungeons & Dragons?' by a group of UK teenagers.
